Artist's statement - Henri Matisse once observed, "Cutting colored papers permits me to draw in color. For me it's a simplification. Instead of establishing a contour and filling it with color, the one modifying the other, I draw directly with color. This guarantees the precise union of the two processes. They become one." For the past few years, I have worked exclusively in the medium of hand cut colored mat board. The process begins with several line drawings that are used as templates. The final works are cut directly from the colored board using a knife. It’s a medium I have stumbled upon and have not seen employed by anyone else. I call my style “Drawing with Color,” after Matisse's process. The influence of his work can be felt and seen in much of what I do. I draw form, space, light and shadow with my knife, shaping the colored mat and assembling the pieces to produce what appears to be a painting but what is actually a drawing cut directly out of color. The mat provides an additional dimension to provoke the viewer, its thickness. As you take the time to view the works on this site, you will see that my exploration of the medium has led me to use both simple and intricate palettes and I feel I have had success with both. I usually start each work by producing a smaller study. This allows me to experiment with the palette so I can be satisfied that I have determined the best choices for the final piece. While I have reproduced my work in graphic format to because a web site is the most accessible way to introduce you to my work, I feel strongly that they must be viewed live to be fully appreciated. A live viewing provides the best opportunity to understand the process and appreciate the impressionistic qualities of the work. I welcome any questions or comments you might have about the work or the process. Please feel free to email me using the link provided above. Many thanks- terence
